Description

This object, also known as NGC 3104, is a disturbed dwarf galaxy located only 25 million light years away in the constellation of Leo Minor at a declination of +41 degrees. This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 3.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 25,000 light years.

This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into one of my favorite Arp categories – Galaxies with Irregular Clumps. Two blue stars are superimposed in front of the galaxy.

This galaxy “structure” is fascinating to me. Our closeness allows us to see numerous star clusters throughout the galaxy. The inner section is occluded and devoid of much detail. Normally, a small dwarf galaxy such as this one would be somewhat transparent throughout the disk.
